Year in Review-Third Year
Third year has been a year of change, and a lot of it was unexpected. It’s mostly been good, but I am in a period of adjustment and growth. I’m more of a work in progress than I ever have been and I can’t wait to keep growing. If you had asked me at the beginning of this year where I would be at the end of Spring Semester I would never have given you the answers that describe my life now.
Fall semester I was on co-op with GE Aviation in Cincinnati and taking 5 credit hours of MBA classes. The semester was largely uneventful, except that by the end I knew that I was ready to move onto a new company. When I accepted my first co-op I thought that I would be with GE for all five rotations and that I would be seeking full-time employment there post-grad, which is now up in the air. I also went on my first Serve Beyond Cincinnati trip, the reflection for which is also on my learning portfolio. Summary is I’m really glad I didn’t pass up the opportunity to go to Orlando for a week before Christmas. The small child who is still very much inside me loved going to the Happiest Place on Earth, even if it was just for a day.
Moving into spring semester, back in classes and looking for a co-op for the first time since freshman year. I ended up landing a co-op at L’Oreal and will be starting there in January. Which still left me with a gap for the summer. Searching for a summer position was not fun, and got less fun after I landed a position for my double. Throw in the happy surprise of landing an executive position in Student Government a year earlier than my college 5 year plan, and it was becoming even harder to leave Cincinnati for the summer, which limited my options for employment. In the end, with only a few weeks left in classes for Spring Semester I decided to take classes for my MBA and waive a co-op semester. Waiving a co-op was something I thought I would never do, I thought it was an admission of weakness that you couldn’t fit all your classes into the class semesters, but so far it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve made in college. On top of last minute deciding to take classes, I also decided to intern at a floral and event design firm in Cincinnati since all my classes are at night. This internship is the break I need from my usual involvement, and has me setting up weddings and counting flowers and other things I don’t usually do and probably will never do again.
Aside from all the changes in my career/college career/more professional path, I also experienced some major changes in my personal life. Relationships ended that I didn’t think would, and new ones are beginning or deepening that I didn’t consider previously. I’m still working out the kinks in this part of my life but I’m having a lot of fun figuring myself out. I’m taking a page out of Ann Perkins’ book, and I’m dating myself. We’ve done some pretty fun things so far. I’ve been skydiving (something I thought I would never have the guts to do), cut my hair short, tried haggis, among other things…who knows what I’ll do next? I know I don’t, but I’m done trying to predict it and ready to try this “go with the flow” thing that some people like so much.
Bring it on.
